Description
A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi featuring a high-ranking courtesan and her attendants, captured in the elegant style of the Kansei era.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts a high-ranking courtesan accompanied by her young attendants. Eishi, a former painter in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to the ukiyo-e genre during the late eighteenth century. His background in the Kano school of painting informs the refined, elongated proportions of his figures, which differ from the more robust styles of his contemporaries.
The composition focuses on the grace of the central figure, whose posture and elaborate kimono suggest her status within the pleasure quarters of Edo. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the folds of the garments and the precise arrangement of the hair ornaments. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft pinks, muted browns, and cream tones to maintain a sense of balance. The inclusion of a cartouche featuring a rabbit motif adds a decorative element, typical of the period's interest in literary and seasonal allusions.
Eishi was known for his depictions of beauties, often referred to as bijin-ga. His work captures the aesthetic ideals of the Kansei era, where elegance and poise were prioritised over the more exaggerated features found in earlier prints. The figures occupy a shallow space, allowing the viewer to appreciate the patterns on the textiles and the subtle interaction between the women. This print serves as an example of the technical precision achieved by master carvers and printers working under Eishi's direction. The work remains a representative piece of the artist's output during his most active period in the 1790s, reflecting the refined tastes of the urban population in Edo.
