Description

A detailed 16th-century engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller depicting the fifth day of creation, featuring a central figure surrounded by marine and terrestrial life.

This engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller depicts the fifth day of creation, a subject drawn from the Book of Genesis. The circular composition is characteristic of the period, allowing the artist to arrange a dense array of figures within a confined space. In the foreground, a muscular, reclining male figure, representing the Creator, rests amidst a variety of marine life, including fish, a crab, and a turtle. The figure is positioned with his back to the viewer, his form rendered with the exaggerated anatomical precision typical of Northern Mannerism.

Beyond the water, the scene transitions to a rocky shoreline where terrestrial animals, such as a deer and lions, are visible. The sky is populated with numerous birds in flight, completing the biblical narrative of the creation of creatures of the air and sea. Muller employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the central figure and the textures of the surrounding environment. The contrast between the dark, deep shadows and the bright, etched highlights creates a sense of volume and movement throughout the circular frame.

Jan Harmensz. Muller was a prominent Dutch engraver, painter, and publisher based in Amsterdam. His work often reflects the influence of Bartholomeus Spranger, whose style was defined by elongated proportions and complex, twisting poses. This print is part of a series illustrating the days of creation, demonstrating the technical mastery of the burin that defined Muller's career. The composition balances the human form with the natural world, creating a narrative that is both theological and decorative. The attention to detail in the depiction of individual species, from the scales of the fish to the feathers of the birds, reveals the observational rigour applied to this imaginative subject.
