Description
A serene woodblock print by Yoshida Hiroshi, capturing a quiet path lined with towering cryptomeria trees under a soft, pale sky.
Yoshida Hiroshi, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, produced this woodblock print in 1937. The work depicts a path lined with towering cryptomeria trees, a common sight in rural Japan. Yoshida, who was trained in Western oil painting techniques before turning to traditional woodblock printing, applied his knowledge of light and atmosphere to this medium. He often travelled extensively to capture specific locations, and his prints are known for their technical precision and atmospheric depth.
The composition uses the verticality of the trees to frame the scene, drawing the eye toward the soft, pale light of the sky visible between the branches. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greys, browns, and soft pinks to convey the quiet stillness of the setting. A horse-drawn cart and a small group of figures provide a sense of scale and human presence, grounding the scene in daily life. Unlike traditional ukiyo-e, which often used bold outlines and flat colour fields, this print employs subtle gradations and layered ink applications to create a sense of volume and distance. The texture of the wood grain is occasionally visible in the printed areas, a characteristic of the high-quality craftsmanship associated with Yoshida's studio. This print represents the artist's ability to synthesise Western perspective with the traditional Japanese aesthetic of the woodblock print.
