A detailed reconstruction of the Cup Bearer figure from the Minoan Procession Fresco at the Palace of Knossos, Crete.
This image depicts a reconstruction of the Cup Bearer, a famous figure from the Procession Fresco discovered at the Palace of Knossos on the island of Crete. The original Minoan artwork dates to the Late Minoan period, approximately 1450 BC. The figure is shown in profile, a characteristic convention of Aegean art, holding a conical rhyton or ritual vessel. The reconstruction highlights the stylistic traits of Minoan wall painting, including the slender, athletic physique of the subject and the use of distinct colour fields to define the anatomy and attire. The figure wears a kilt with decorative patterns and jewellery, including an armband and a bracelet. The hair is rendered with flowing, stylised locks, typical of the period's aesthetic. The reconstruction combines fragments of the original plaster with modern fill to suggest the complete form of the youth. The composition is flat, prioritising the silhouette and the rhythmic arrangement of the procession. The original fresco was unearthed by Sir Arthur Evans during his excavations at the turn of the twentieth century. It remains one of the most recognisable examples of Bronze Age Aegean art, providing insight into the ceremonial life and social hierarchy of the Minoan civilisation. This print captures the aesthetic of the archaeological restoration, presenting the figure against a neutral background that allows the details of the costume and the posture to remain clear. It serves as a record of the visual culture of the ancient Mediterranean, documenting the artistic conventions that governed the depiction of the human form in the second millennium BC.
