A delicate etching and aquatint by Cornelis Ploos van Amstel, capturing a woman in a quiet, candlelit interior with soft, atmospheric tones.
Cornelis Ploos van Amstel was a Dutch printmaker and collector known for his technical experiments in reproducing drawings and paintings. This work, titled Dame bij kaarslicht, demonstrates his mastery of the aquatint process, a technique he employed to mimic the tonal qualities of wash drawings. The scene depicts a woman seated at a table, illuminated by the warm, flickering glow of a single candle. The composition focuses on the interplay between light and shadow, a hallmark of the Dutch tradition that Ploos van Amstel sought to preserve and replicate through his printmaking methods.
The figure is rendered with soft edges, allowing the light to define the contours of her face and the folds of her clothing. A curtain hangs to the right, framing the interior space and adding a sense of domestic intimacy. On the table, the presence of writing implements suggests a moment of quiet reflection or correspondence. The monochromatic, sepia-toned palette enhances the atmospheric quality of the scene, drawing the viewer into the hushed environment of the room.
Ploos van Amstel was particularly interested in the tactile nature of art, often using multiple plates to achieve the specific textures and depths found in original works. His prints were intended to provide collectors with high-quality facsimiles of works by earlier masters, though he also produced original compositions in this style. This print reflects his technical precision and his appreciation for the chiaroscuro effects popularised by seventeenth-century Dutch painters. The work remains a fine example of eighteenth-century printmaking, where innovation in technique met a deep respect for historical artistic practices.
