This hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicts the biblical figures of Dan and Gad, two of the sons of Jacob. As a prominent member of the Sadeler family of engravers, Johann was active in Antwerp and later in Munich, where he produced numerous works based on religious and allegorical themes. This print belongs to a series illustrating the twelve tribes of Israel, a subject popular in late sixteenth-century European print culture.

The composition is divided into two distinct panels. On the left, Dan is shown in a tunic and turban, accompanied by a horse and a serpent, referencing the prophecy in Genesis regarding his tribe. On the right, Gad appears in military attire, complete with a plumed helmet and sword, reflecting his association with warfare. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and expressive poses characteristic of the Mannerist style. The background features rolling hills and distant architectural structures, providing a sense of spatial depth despite the stylised nature of the figures.

The application of colour, likely added after the initial printing, enhances the decorative quality of the work. The palette includes muted blues, reds, and ochres, which define the garments and armour of the figures. Latin inscriptions at the base of each panel provide context, identifying the figures and citing the relevant biblical passages from Genesis.
