Description
A fine art print of Titian's mythological masterpiece, depicting the reclining figure of Danaë receiving a shower of gold.
Titian painted this version of the Danaë myth for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. The subject derives from Ovid's Metamorphoses, depicting the moment Zeus visits Danaë in the form of a golden rain. Titian presents the figure of Danaë reclining on a bed, her posture echoing classical models of the reclining nude. Beside her, a winged Cupid figure observes the scene. The composition relies on the Venetian mastery of colour and light, with soft transitions across the skin tones and the atmospheric treatment of the golden shower descending from the clouds.
This work belongs to a series of mythological paintings Titian produced for his patrons, often referred to as 'poesie'. These works allowed the artist to explore narrative themes through the human form. The treatment of the drapery and the soft focus on the background elements demonstrate the artist's mature style, where brushwork becomes more fluid and less reliant on rigid outlines. The painting is currently held in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples. It remains a primary example of how sixteenth-century Venetian artists interpreted classical literature through the medium of oil paint, prioritising sensory experience and tonal harmony over linear precision.
The figure of Danaë is positioned to draw the eye across the canvas, from the draped fabric to the golden light above. The inclusion of the Cupid figure adds a layer of narrative tension, contrasting the stillness of the reclining woman with the movement of the divine visitor. This print captures the tonal qualities of the original oil painting, preserving the warmth of the palette and the soft modelling of the figures. It is a study in the application of light to define volume and texture, characteristic of Titian's approach to the female nude during this period of his career.
