Description
A stark, expressive ink drawing by Dutch CoBrA artist Lucebert, depicting a kinetic figure through bold, gestural lines.
Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. As a poet and painter, he was closely associated with the CoBrA movement, which prioritised spontaneous expression and a rejection of traditional aesthetic constraints. This work, titled Dans, captures the raw, gestural energy characteristic of his output during the latter half of the twentieth century.
The drawing features a singular, anthropomorphic figure caught in a kinetic pose. The lines are thick and assertive, creating a sense of urgency that defines the composition. Lucebert employs a simplified, almost primal visual language to convey movement. The figure appears suspended in the white space of the paper, stripped of background detail to focus entirely on the physical distortion of the subject. The cross-hatching within the limbs adds texture, contrasting with the bold, continuous outlines that define the silhouette.
Lucebert often drew inspiration from children's art and folk traditions, seeking a form of expression that felt unmediated by academic training. His approach to the figure is not concerned with anatomical accuracy. Instead, he focuses on the emotional resonance of the gesture. The date, 25 IV 70, is inscribed at the bottom, placing this work within his mature period. The ink work demonstrates his ability to balance chaotic energy with a controlled, rhythmic application of line. This piece offers a clear view into the artist's practice of combining literary sensibility with visual improvisation, resulting in a stark, graphic representation of human motion.
