Description
A minimalist woodcut by Aristide Maillol depicting a scene from the pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe, featuring clean lines and simplified forms.
This woodcut by Aristide Maillol depicts a scene from the ancient Greek pastoral romance, Daphnis and Chloe. The composition shows the two protagonists seated side by side, with Daphnis instructing Chloe in the use of a flute. Maillol, primarily known for his sculpture, applied a similar focus on simplified, rounded forms to his graphic work. The figures possess a weight and physical presence that echo his three-dimensional practice, whilst the surrounding foliage is rendered with minimal, schematic marks.
Maillol produced a series of woodcuts for a luxury edition of Longus's Daphnis and Chloe, published by Henri Creuzevault in Paris. His approach to the medium is direct and unadorned. He avoids excessive detail, preferring to define the subjects through bold, clean outlines and a clear separation between the figures and the background. The stone wall upon which the pair sits provides a horizontal anchor for the composition, contrasting with the verticality of the figures and the organic shapes of the trees above.
The print demonstrates Maillol's interest in classical themes, which he interpreted through a modern lens. By stripping away unnecessary ornamentation, he directs attention to the interaction between the two characters. The stark contrast of black ink against the paper surface creates a graphic clarity that is characteristic of his book illustrations from this period. This work offers a glimpse into the artist's process of distilling complex narratives into essential visual components, maintaining a balance between the rustic subject matter and a refined, deliberate execution.
