This engraving depicts the biblical narrative of King David fleeing Jerusalem to escape his son, Absalom. The composition is based on a design by the Flemish painter Maerten de Vos, whose influence is evident in the dramatic staging and the treatment of the figures. Aegidius Sadeler (II), a member of the prominent Sadeler family of engravers, demonstrates his technical mastery through the precise use of hatching and cross-hatching to define form and texture.

In the foreground, David is shown in a moment of distress, surrounded by his followers. To the right, priests carry the Ark of the Covenant, a detail that emphasises the religious gravity of the exodus. The background features a walled city, rendered with the architectural detail typical of late sixteenth-century printmaking. The trees and foliage are executed with a rhythmic quality that directs the eye across the scene, while the figures are arranged to convey a sense of movement and urgency. The Latin inscription at the base provides context, linking the visual narrative to the Second Book of Samuel and the Psalms.

Sadeler was active in Prague at the court of Emperor Rudolf II, where he produced numerous works that circulated widely across Europe. His ability to translate the painterly qualities of de Vos into the medium of engraving allowed for the dissemination of complex narrative scenes to a broader audience. This print is a fine example of the technical rigour and narrative clarity that defined the period, offering a glimpse into the intersection of religious history and print culture in the early modern era.
