Charles-Francois Daubigny was a central figure in the transition toward plein air painting. This work, dated 1865, captures the quiet atmosphere of the Oise river at dawn. Daubigny famously utilised a studio boat, which he named Le Botin, to observe the riverbanks from the water level. This perspective allowed him to record the subtle shifts in light and the reflection of the sky upon the water surface with greater accuracy than traditional studio methods permitted.

The composition is defined by a low horizon line, which grants the expansive, cloud-filled sky a dominant presence. The palette consists of muted earth tones, soft greys, and pale blues, reflecting the early morning light. A small boat is visible near the bank, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the quiet environment. The brushwork is loose and fluid, particularly in the rendering of the water and the foliage, which suggests the movement of the air and the stillness of the dawn.

Daubigny's approach to this scene avoids the dramatic or the idealised. Instead, he focuses on the observation of natural phenomena.
