The work depicts a coppersmith at his workbench, captured in the act of shaping metal with a hammer. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the interior workshop where the artisan focuses on his task, and a glimpse through an open doorway into a street scene where another figure continues the work.

The artist employs precise, linear hatching to define the textures of the metal vessels, the wooden stool, and the architectural elements of the workshop. The inclusion of text above and below the image provides a moralising context, common in Dutch prints of this period, which equates the physical labour of the craftsman with the spiritual refinement of the human soul.
