This etching by Jan Luyken, titled De Muzikant, originates from the 1694 publication Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations). Luyken, a prolific Dutch engraver and poet, produced this series to document the various trades and activities of seventeenth-century Amsterdam. The work depicts a musician seated in a room, focused on playing a lute. Beside him, a second figure is partially visible, engaged with a stringed instrument, likely a viola da gamba. The composition is structured around the interior space, which opens through an arched doorway to a garden setting featuring a fountain and a small dog.

Luyken employs fine, controlled lines to define the textures of the clothing, the wooden instruments, and the architectural elements.
