A satirical etching by Cornelis Saftleven representing the sense of smell through a hunched, pipe-smoking figure.
This etching by Cornelis Saftleven, titled De Reuck, forms part of a series depicting the five senses. Saftleven, a Dutch painter and printmaker active in Rotterdam, frequently explored themes of peasant life, satire, and the grotesque. In this work, the sense of smell is represented through the figure of a hunched, pipe-smoking man. The character is rendered with exaggerated features, wearing a cap and carrying a large pack, which aligns with the artist's interest in caricature and the depiction of social outcasts or travellers. The composition is minimalist, focusing entirely on the figure against a plain background. Saftleven employs precise, controlled line work to define the contours of the man's clothing and the smoke curling from his pipe. The etching technique allows for a clear, graphic quality that emphasises the texture of the fabric and the physical posture of the subject. The inclusion of the title at the top and a small number at the bottom indicates its origin as part of a larger, thematic print series. Saftleven's approach to the senses is typical of the period, where allegorical subjects were often translated into everyday, sometimes humorous, human experiences. Rather than using classical or mythological figures, he opts for a more grounded, albeit distorted, representation. The figure's hunched back and worn attire suggest a life of hardship, yet the act of smoking provides a moment of sensory engagement. This print offers a view into the seventeenth-century Dutch fascination with moralising imagery and the classification of human experience through art. It remains a clear example of the artist's technical skill in etching and his penchant for character-driven narratives.
