This study by the Dutch artist Jean Grandjean depicts a well-known figure in Rome during the late eighteenth century, a beggar identified as Bajocco. Grandjean, who travelled to Italy in 1779, produced a series of sketches documenting the street life of the city. His approach to this subject is observational, capturing the specific posture and weathered features of the individual with a directness that avoids sentimentality.

The drawing is executed in black chalk on blue paper, a common choice for artists of the period who wished to utilise the mid-tone of the support to create volume. Grandjean employs white heightening to define the light falling across the figure, particularly on the face, the hands, and the folds of the clothing. The line quality is precise, reflecting the artist's training and his interest in the anatomical structure of his subject. Grandjean's work in Italy was cut short by his premature death in 1781.
