Description
A detailed mezzotint by Cornelis Dusart depicting an elderly couple counting coins, representing the stage of adulthood.
Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, produced this mezzotint as part of a series depicting the ages of man. This specific work, titled De volwassenheid, or Adulthood, captures a domestic scene focused on the accumulation of wealth. An elderly couple sits at a table, meticulously weighing coins with a small balance scale. The room is filled with indicators of their trade and status, including heavy sacks of currency and an open chest overflowing with goods.
Dusart employs the mezzotint technique to great effect here. The process allows for a wide range of tonal values, moving from deep, velvety blacks to soft, luminous highlights. This creates a sense of atmosphere within the cramped, dimly lit interior. The light source, coming from a window on the left, illuminates the faces of the couple and the metallic glint of the coins, while the background remains obscured in shadow. A third figure appears in the doorway, adding a narrative layer to the composition.
The work reflects the Dutch fascination with genre scenes that offer moral commentary on human behaviour. By focusing on the act of counting money, Dusart invites the viewer to consider the preoccupations of middle age. The textures of the clothing, the rough wood of the furniture, and the metallic surfaces are rendered with precision, demonstrating the technical capability of the artist in the medium of printmaking. This print provides a window into the social and economic concerns of the late seventeenth-century Netherlands, presented with a focus on realism and tonal depth.
