Description
An allegorical depiction of winter by Dutch master Jacob de Wit, featuring putti in a classical composition.
Jacob de Wit was a prominent Dutch painter, known for his decorative schemes and his mastery of the grisaille technique. This work, titled De winter, forms part of an allegorical series depicting the four seasons. The composition features a group of putti, a common motif in eighteenth-century European art, used here to personify the characteristics of the winter season.
On the left, two figures are huddled near a brazier, their gestures suggesting the need for warmth against the cold. The figure wrapped in a golden-orange cloak provides a visual contrast to the cooler tones of the background. To the right, the scene shifts to a more abundant display, featuring a central figure adorned with grapes and a leopard, referencing the mythological associations often found in allegorical cycles. The inclusion of fruit and the feline companion introduces a sense of classical narrative, typical of the period's interest in antiquity.
De Wit demonstrates his technical skill through the soft modelling of the figures and the careful arrangement of the foreground elements. The lighting is managed to draw attention to the central figures, while the background remains somewhat atmospheric and subdued. The work reflects the taste of the Dutch elite during the early eighteenth century, who favoured decorative paintings that combined classical themes with a lighter, more playful aesthetic. This print captures the textures of the drapery and the delicate features of the putti, offering a clear view of the artist's approach to composition and form. It is a representative example of the decorative painting style that defined much of De Wit's career in Amsterdam, where he produced numerous works for the interiors of grand canal houses.
