Description
A 1684 engraving by Claude Mellan depicting the body of Christ on the tomb, rendered with precise line work and solemn composition.
Claude Mellan, a French engraver and painter, produced this work in 1684. The composition depicts the body of Christ laid out upon a stone tomb, with the Virgin Mary standing behind, her arms outstretched in a gesture of mourning. The scene is set within a rocky environment, suggesting the entrance to the sepulchre. To the right, two figures observe the scene, while others are visible in the background.
Mellan is recognised for his technical precision and his mastery of the burin. He often employed a technique involving single-line engraving, where the variation in line thickness creates the illusion of volume and light. In this print, the shading is achieved through controlled, parallel strokes that follow the contours of the figures and the surrounding rock. The inscription on the side of the tomb, 'FACTVS OBEDIENS VSQVE AD MORTEM', refers to the biblical passage regarding Christ's obedience until death.
The print demonstrates the characteristics of the French Baroque style, focusing on clarity of form and a restrained emotional tone. The figures are rendered with anatomical accuracy, and the lighting is used to direct the viewer's attention to the central figures of Christ and the Virgin. The inclusion of the crown of thorns and nails in the foreground serves as a symbolic reminder of the Passion. This work reflects the artist's ability to combine technical rigour with a solemn narrative approach, typical of his later career in Paris. The composition remains balanced, avoiding excessive ornamentation to maintain the focus on the gravity of the subject matter.
