Nikolai Ge painted this work early in his career, while he was still a student at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. The subject draws from the tragic history of the Lambertazzi and Geremei families in medieval Bologna, a narrative often compared to the story of Romeo and Juliet. Imelda Lambertazzi, a member of the Ghibelline faction, was discovered dead beside her lover, Bonifazio Geremei, a member of the opposing Guelph faction.

The composition focuses on the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. Imelda is depicted collapsed on the floor, her pale gown providing a stark contrast to the dark, shadowed interior of the room. Two figures stand in the background, their postures suggesting shock or discovery. Ge employs a dramatic use of light, which illuminates the central figures while leaving much of the surrounding architecture in deep shadow. This technique directs the viewer's attention to the emotional weight of the scene.

At this stage in his development, Ge was heavily influenced by the rigorous training of the Academy, which prioritised historical accuracy and narrative clarity. The painting demonstrates his early ability to manage complex spatial arrangements and human emotion within a confined setting. While he would later move toward more psychological and religious themes, this work remains a clear example of his technical proficiency in the mid-nineteenth century. The muted colour palette and the focus on the physical reality of the figures reflect the conventions of the period, yet the work carries a distinct sense of theatricality that would become a recurring element in his later, more mature compositions. The piece serves as a record of the artist's academic training and his initial engagement with the dramatic potential of historical subjects.
