Pavel Filonov, a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, developed a unique methodology he termed Analytical Art. This approach prioritised the organic growth of a painting, where the artist builds the image from small, cell-like units rather than through traditional perspective or composition. Defeater of the City, produced between 1914 and 1915, demonstrates this philosophy through its dense, fragmented surface.

The central figure dominates the frame, their face rendered with a sculptural quality that contrasts against the chaotic, geometric environment. The background dissolves into a multitude of small, interlocking planes, suggesting an urban environment in a state of flux or disintegration. Filonov treats the entire canvas as a singular, living organism, where the distinction between the subject and the surrounding space becomes blurred. The palette relies on earthy ochres, browns, and muted blues, which serve to unify the complex arrangement of shapes.

Filonov often spoke of the artist as a researcher, someone who observes the hidden structures of reality. In this work, the figure appears to emerge from the very fabric of the city, suggesting a symbiotic or perhaps adversarial relationship between the individual and the modern industrial environment.
