This engraving by Gérard Edelinck depicts the marble statue of Diana, originally sculpted by Martin Desjardins for the gardens of Versailles. Edelinck, a Flemish engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to translate the three-dimensional qualities of sculpture into the two-dimensional medium of print.

The composition presents the goddess in a contrapposto stance, her form draped in classical robes that suggest movement and grace. Beside her stands a small deer, a traditional attribute of the huntress. The engraving captures the texture of the marble, the folds of the fabric, and the delicate features of the figure with remarkable clarity. The inclusion of bilingual text at the base, in French and Latin, identifies the subject and the original sculptor, reflecting the formal documentation common in seventeenth-century print culture.

Edelinck utilised a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to model the figure, creating a sense of volume and depth that mimics the physical presence of the original statue. This work is part of a broader series documenting the royal collections and the decorative programme of Versailles.
