Description
A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Paulus Pontius, depicting the Spanish military commander Diego Felipe de Guzman in formal armour.
This engraving by Paulus Pontius depicts Diego Felipe de Guzman, the Marques de Leganes, a prominent Spanish military commander and diplomat. Pontius, a skilled printmaker from Antwerp, worked closely with Anthony van Dyck to translate the painter's compositions into the medium of engraving. This work is part of the Iconography series, a collection of portraits documenting the notable figures of the seventeenth century.
The subject is presented in half-length, wearing polished plate armour that reflects the light with precision. His hand rests upon a baton, a traditional symbol of military authority. The collar, a stiffened lace ruff, provides a contrast to the metallic textures of his breastplate. Pontius employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the contours of the face, the texture of the hair, and the reflective surfaces of the armour. The background features a draped curtain, a common device in portraiture of the period to suggest a formal setting.
Below the portrait, the Latin inscription details the titles and offices held by the Marques, including his role as a commander in the Spanish Netherlands. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of Pontius, who was able to capture the psychological presence of the sitter while maintaining the clarity required for high-quality reproduction. The composition follows the conventions of aristocratic portraiture, focusing on the status and martial character of the individual. This print remains a record of the collaboration between the painter Van Dyck and his chosen engraver, reflecting the dissemination of portrait styles across Europe during the Baroque era.
