Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, a favourite of the Victorian era, achieved widespread recognition for his depictions of animals. In this work, he presents a study in contrast through the juxtaposition of two distinct canine personalities. The larger dog, a bloodhound named Grafton, occupies the upper portion of the kennel with a calm, composed demeanour. His gaze is directed away from the viewer, suggesting a sense of quiet authority and patience. Beside him, a small Scottish terrier, known as Piper, peers out with an alert, inquisitive expression. The terrier represents the impudence of the title, his smaller frame and bright eyes providing a sharp counterpoint to the bloodhound's stillness.

Landseer employs a dark, atmospheric background to frame the subjects, drawing the viewer's focus directly to the textures of the dogs' fur and the weathered wood of the kennel. The lighting is focused, creating a sense of depth and volume that brings the animals into the foreground.
