William Holman Hunt, a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, travelled extensively in the Middle East to achieve historical accuracy in his religious subjects. This work captures the town of Nazareth with a focus on the arid, sun-drenched topography of the region. Hunt employed a meticulous technique, applying small, precise strokes of colour to build up the texture of the rocky terrain and the stone architecture of the settlement.
