Herman van Swanevelt, a Dutch painter and etcher, spent a significant portion of his career in Rome, where he became known for his contributions to the development of the classical idealised scene. The composition follows the conventions of the period, featuring a prominent foreground with rocky outcrops and dense foliage that frame the receding view of the river and distant hills.
