Description
A detailed 1754 etching by Frans Houttuyn documenting the catastrophic flooding of the Rhine and IJssel rivers with an accompanying map.
This etching by Frans Houttuyn documents the catastrophic flooding of the Rhine and IJssel rivers in 1754. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. The upper portion depicts the immediate aftermath of the disaster, showing displaced families, livestock, and small boats navigating the inundated terrain. The scene captures the urgency of the event, with figures attempting to salvage belongings while smoke rises in the distance.
The lower portion features an allegorical presentation of the affected region. Two putti are shown unfurling a large map that delineates the course of the rivers and the specific locations impacted by the dyke failures, including towns such as Zwolle, Hattem, and Deventer. This cartographic element provides a precise geographical context for the disaster, transforming the print into both a historical record and a visual report of the environmental crisis.
Houttuyn, a Dutch publisher and engraver, utilised the conventions of mid-eighteenth-century printmaking to communicate the scale of the flooding. The fine line work and cross-hatching techniques create a sense of depth in the upper scene, contrasting with the more structured, symbolic arrangement of the map below. The inclusion of the putti reflects the period's preference for classical motifs even when documenting contemporary calamities. This work serves as a primary visual source for understanding the hydrological history of the Netherlands and the recurring challenges posed by the river systems to local populations. The print remains a significant example of how eighteenth-century Dutch artists combined technical cartography with narrative illustration to document national events.
