Dragon and Tiger - Maruyama Ōkyo

This diptych by Maruyama Ōkyo presents a classic pairing of the dragon and the tiger, subjects deeply embedded in East Asian iconography. The dragon, traditionally associated with water and the heavens, emerges from swirling, atmospheric clouds. Its form is suggested through subtle ink washes, creating a sense of movement and ethereal presence. In contrast, the tiger is rendered with a focus on physical mass and texture. The artist uses precise brushwork to define the animal's fur and muscular structure, grounding the creature in the physical realm.

Maruyama Ōkyo founded the Maruyama school, which is recognised for its synthesis of traditional Japanese ink techniques and Western-influenced observational drawing. This work demonstrates his ability to balance decorative composition with a degree of naturalism. The tiger, in particular, displays the artist's interest in capturing the specific anatomy of the animal, a departure from the more stylised depictions common in earlier periods. The dragon, conversely, relies on the expressive potential of ink wash to convey power and mystery.
