Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war art scene. Initially associated with the CoBrA movement, his work maintains a raw, spontaneous energy that rejects traditional academic constraints. This piece, titled Drie fantasiefiguren, dates to 1984 and demonstrates his characteristic approach to figurative abstraction.

The composition features three distinct, creature-like forms rendered with a combination of fluid ink lines and soft watercolour washes. The figures possess a childlike, almost primal quality, typical of the artist's later output. The left-most figure is defined by a large, singular eye and a bulky, amorphous body, while the central and right-hand figures appear more linear and gestural. Lucebert uses a limited palette of muted tones, allowing the stark black ink outlines to dictate the visual rhythm of the work. The paper retains the perforated edge of a sketchbook, which provides a sense of immediacy and informality to the final image.
