This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e that emerged following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859. These prints served as a visual medium for the Japanese public to understand the appearance, customs, and technologies of the foreigners who arrived in their country.

The composition depicts a performance by Dutch acrobats, a subject that fascinated the local population. The central figure performs a handstand upon the back of a horse, while a second man stands to the side, observing the display. The horse is rendered with a distinctive star-patterned coat, reflecting the artist's imaginative interpretation of foreign livestock. The print employs the characteristic flat colour planes and bold outlines associated with the mid-nineteenth-century woodblock tradition.

Utagawa Yoshikazu, a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was a prolific producer of these images. His work captures the curiosity of the era, documenting the cultural exchange between Japan and the West. The inclusion of the cartouche in the upper left corner provides the series title, while the publisher's mark of Jōshūya Kinzō is visible, confirming its commercial origin.
