Thomas Hill was a central figure in the documentation of the American West during the nineteenth century. Born in Birmingham, England, he emigrated to the United States as a child, eventually becoming associated with the Hudson River School. His work often focused on the dramatic topography of California, particularly the Yosemite Valley, which he visited frequently throughout his career.

This composition captures the valley at dawn, a time when the light creates soft transitions across the granite cliffs. The vertical orientation emphasises the sheer scale of the rock faces, which dominate the upper portion of the frame.
