Eguchi no Kimi - Katsukawa Shuntei

In Japanese folklore, she is often identified as a manifestation of the bodhisattva Fugen, who is traditionally depicted riding a white elephant. Katsukawa Shuntei presents a synthesis of these identities, showing the woman seated atop a large, gentle elephant. The composition relies on a muted, earthy background that allows the figure and the animal to occupy the space with a sense of quietude.

Shuntei, a pupil of Katsukawa Shun'ei, was known for his work in the ukiyo-e tradition, particularly his depictions of warriors and historical subjects. This piece demonstrates his ability to handle delicate line work, particularly in the rendering of the elephant's form and the flowing robes of the woman. The figure of the courtesan is dressed in a patterned kimono, providing a subtle contrast to the monochromatic treatment of the elephant.
