José María Velasco is widely recognised for his meticulous approach to the geography of Mexico. While he is most famous for his expansive views of the Valley of Mexico, his body of work also includes smaller, more atmospheric studies that capture specific light conditions and topographical features. El Calvario, painted in 1897, demonstrates his ability to render the subtle textures of earth and vegetation alongside a dramatic sky.

The composition focuses on a sloping hillside, rendered in muted tones of brown, ochre, and deep red. The path winding up the incline provides a sense of scale and direction, drawing the viewer towards the horizon.
