A refined winter genre scene depicting an elegant group on the ice, rendered in the characteristic printmaking style of Cornelis Ploos van Amstel.
This work by Cornelis Ploos van Amstel captures a winter scene featuring an elegant group of figures on the ice. The composition is divided between the foreground, where the well-dressed party stands, and the background, which depicts a wider frozen canal scene with smaller figures engaged in winter activities. The artist, known for his technical experiments in printmaking, utilised etching and aquatint to replicate the appearance of a wash drawing.
The foreground figures are rendered with attention to the fashion of the seventeenth century, including ruffs, capes, and a mask worn by the central female figure. This choice of subject matter reflects the eighteenth-century interest in the Dutch Golden Age, a period Ploos van Amstel sought to preserve through his innovative print techniques. The background architecture, featuring a church tower, provides a sense of place, grounding the scene in a typical Dutch winter environment.
The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance fine line work with tonal washes. By using multiple plates, he achieved a depth of colour and texture that mimics the original ink and watercolour studies he collected. The scene is not merely a depiction of leisure but a deliberate exercise in historical revivalism. The figures appear posed, almost theatrical, suggesting a curated view of the past rather than a spontaneous observation. This print serves as an example of the sophisticated printmaking culture in the Netherlands during the late eighteenth century, where the appreciation for earlier masters influenced both the subject matter and the aesthetic approach of contemporary artists.
