Antoine Pesne, a French painter who spent much of his career in Prussia, captured the likeness of Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel-Bevern during the mid-eighteenth century. As the wife of Frederick the Great, Elisabeth Christine occupied a position of high status within the Prussian court. Pesne was the court painter to the Hohenzollern dynasty, and his work reflects the aesthetic preferences of the era, which favoured light, decorative elements and a refined approach to portraiture.
