This mezzotint by James McArdell depicts Elizabeth Hamilton, later Countess of Gramont, portrayed in the guise of Saint Catherine. The work is based on an original painting by Sir Peter Lely, a dominant figure in English portraiture during the seventeenth century. McArdell, an Irish engraver who achieved great success in London, was highly regarded for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paint into the medium of mezzotint.
