Harding was highly regarded for his ability to codify the techniques of drawing natural forms, particularly trees, for his students. This specific sheet presents two distinct studies of elm foliage, labelled as Lesson 33 and Lesson 34.

The composition focuses on the textural representation of leaves and branches. Harding employs a systematic approach to mark-making, using short, rhythmic strokes to suggest the volume and density of the elm canopy. The left study emphasises the outline and structure of the leaf clusters, while the right study introduces more complex shading to convey depth and light. By isolating these elements from the broader context of a full tree, Harding encourages the viewer to observe the specific character of the elm species.
