Description
A woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting an English couple in mid-nineteenth-century Japan.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the Bakumatsu period. As Japan opened its ports to international trade, artists documented the arrival of foreigners with curiosity. This work depicts an English couple, a subject that fascinated the Japanese public at the time. The male figure wears a hat and trousers, while the female figure is mounted on a horse, dressed in a long coat and skirt.
The composition is characteristic of Yoshitora, who was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. The print uses bold outlines and flat areas of colour, typical of the woodblock medium. The figures are rendered with a degree of stylisation that reflects the artist's interpretation of Western fashion. The background includes architectural elements that suggest a port setting, providing context for the encounter. The cartouche in the upper right corner identifies the subjects as English, using the term Igirisujin.
Yoshitora was prolific in producing these prints, which served as a visual record of the rapid changes occurring in Japanese society. The print captures a moment of cultural exchange, presenting the foreign visitors through a lens that blends traditional Japanese artistic conventions with the new subject matter of the West. The colour palette is restrained, relying on blues, browns, and muted tones to define the forms. This piece offers a glimpse into the mid-nineteenth-century Japanese perception of the outside world, documenting the sartorial and social differences that defined the era of early contact.
