This work is the predella panel from the larger San Bartolomeo Altarpiece, commissioned for the church of San Bartolomeo in Bergamo. Lorenzo Lotto, a Venetian painter active during the High Renaissance, demonstrates his characteristic approach to narrative composition and emotional expression in this scene. The painting depicts the moment Christ is placed into the tomb, surrounded by figures whose gestures and postures convey a sense of grief and physical exertion.
