A historical depiction of revolutionary forces arriving at the Moscow Kremlin in November 1917, painted by Konstantin Yuon.
Konstantin Yuon captures a specific moment of the Russian Revolution in this work. The scene depicts the arrival of revolutionary forces at the Trinity Gates of the Moscow Kremlin in November 1917. Yuon, known for his interest in the architectural character of Russian cities, balances the monumental presence of the Kremlin walls with the chaotic movement of the figures in the foreground. The composition is divided between the static, historic architecture and the dynamic, human element of the uprising. The white Kutafya Tower stands in the centre, flanked by the red brick of the Trinity Tower. These structures provide a sense of place, grounding the historical event within the physical geography of Moscow. The ground is covered in a light dusting of snow, which reflects the pale, overcast sky and creates a cool tonal base for the painting. In the foreground, figures are scattered across the square. Some carry rifles, while others gather near transport vehicles. The presence of red flags provides a sharp colour contrast against the muted tones of the winter environment. Yuon employs a documentary approach, focusing on the scale of the architecture relative to the individuals involved in the conflict. The brushwork is controlled, allowing for clear definition of the building facades and the varied postures of the crowd. This work provides a visual record of the political shifts occurring in Moscow during the autumn of 1917, documenting the transition of power as it unfolded in the public spaces of the city.
