Carl Rottmann, a German painter associated with the Romantic movement, travelled to Greece in 1834 at the request of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. This commission resulted in a series of works documenting the Greek terrain, intended for the Hofgarten arcades in Munich. His approach to these subjects combined topographical accuracy with a specific atmospheric quality, often focusing on the interplay between light and the rugged Mediterranean geography.

In this watercolour, Rottmann depicts the coastal region of Epidauros. The composition is structured around a wide, panoramic view that stretches from the foreground rocks towards the distant sea. The artist employs a muted palette of ochre, burnt sienna, and soft greens to capture the dry, sun-baked earth of the Peloponnese. The sky occupies a significant portion of the frame, rendered with delicate washes that suggest the shifting clouds and the hazy light characteristic of the region.

Unlike the more dramatic or theatrical compositions common in the period, this work maintains a sense of quiet observation.
