This engraving by Jacob Matham depicts the mythological figures of Eros and Anteros in a moment of intimate embrace. Matham, a prominent member of the Haarlem school of printmakers, was a stepson and pupil of Hendrick Goltzius. His work reflects the stylistic conventions of Northern Mannerism, characterised by elongated figures, muscular tension, and a sophisticated approach to anatomical modelling through cross-hatching and varied line weight.

The composition centres on the two figures, who are seated upon a rocky outcrop. Eros, the god of erotic love, is shown with a flaming torch, while Anteros, often associated with requited love or the punishment of those who scorn love, mirrors his posture. The inclusion of the torch serves as a classical attribute, suggesting the heat and transformative power of affection. The background features a distant, atmospheric vista, typical of the period's interest in combining foreground figure studies with expansive, imaginative settings.

Matham employs a highly disciplined engraving technique. The musculature of the figures is defined by rhythmic, swelling lines that follow the contours of the body, a method heavily influenced by the virtuoso style of Goltzius. The drapery is rendered with sharp, angular folds, creating a sense of movement and volume that contrasts with the stillness of the rocky base.
