Arkhip Kuindzhi was a master of light and atmospheric effects within the Russian realist tradition. In this work, he explores the transition of light as day fades into night. The composition is dominated by a stark contrast between the illuminated peak of the mountain and the deep, encroaching shadows of the valley below. Kuindzhi often utilised a limited palette to achieve a sense of luminosity, focusing on the way light reflects off surfaces such as snow and water.

The painting demonstrates his interest in the optical properties of colour. By placing a bright, cool-toned mountain against a dark, saturated foreground, he creates a sense of immense depth and scale.
