Evening at Tagonoura - Hasui Kawase

Hasui Kawase, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, produced this woodblock print in 1940. The composition frames Mount Fuji through the vertical silhouettes of pine trees, a technique that creates a sense of depth and distance. The mountain, bathed in the soft, pale light of dusk, occupies the centre of the frame, while a lone figure with a horse-drawn cart traverses the foreground. The colour palette relies on cool blues and muted earth tones, capturing the quiet atmosphere of the Japanese countryside.

Kawase travelled extensively across Japan, sketching scenes that he later translated into woodblock prints with the assistance of master carvers and printers. His work is known for its atmospheric quality, often focusing on the effects of light, weather, and the changing seasons. This print reflects his ability to combine traditional Japanese printmaking techniques with Western-influenced perspective and shading. The texture of the paper and the subtle gradations of colour, known as bokashi, are characteristic of the high-quality production standards maintained by the Watanabe Print Shop, which published much of his output.

By choosing Tagonoura as his subject, Kawase engages with a location that has long held a place in Japanese art and literature. The print avoids excessive detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the foreground elements and the distant, snow-capped peak. The vertical orientation and the framing device of the trees guide the eye through the scene, from the textured grasses in the immediate foreground to the vast, open sky behind the mountain.
