Arkhip Kuindzhi, a painter of Greek descent born in Mariupol, occupies a distinct position within the late nineteenth-century Russian art scene. Evening in Ukraine, completed in 1878, demonstrates his preoccupation with the atmospheric effects of light and the specific qualities of the Ukrainian countryside. The composition captures the transition from day to night, a moment when the sun has dipped below the horizon, leaving behind a soft, lingering glow that illuminates the whitewashed walls of the traditional rural dwellings.
