Description
A detailed 1606 etching by Claes Jansz. Visscher documenting the public execution of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators in London.
This print by Claes Jansz. Visscher depicts the public execution of the conspirators involved in the 1605 Gunpowder Plot. Produced in the Netherlands shortly after the event, the work functions as a visual news report for a European audience. Visscher employs a wide-angle perspective to capture the chaotic scene in the Old Palace Yard at Westminster.
The composition is divided into multiple narrative zones. In the centre, the gallows and the dismemberment of the condemned are shown with clinical precision. The surrounding square is filled with spectators, soldiers on horseback, and officials, creating a sense of crowded public spectacle. Above the scene, two allegorical figures, Iustitia (Justice) and Fama (Fame), hold a cartouche containing a Latin inscription that details the date and nature of the punishment.
Visscher uses fine, controlled lines to define the architecture of the surrounding buildings and the individual figures in the crowd. The etching technique allows for a high degree of detail, from the textures of the clothing to the smoke rising from the fires. The work provides a window into the seventeenth-century practice of disseminating political news through printed media. It captures the grim reality of state-sanctioned punishment during the early modern period, reflecting the political tensions of the time. The print remains a primary visual source for historians studying the aftermath of the failed plot against King James I and the English Parliament.
