Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, produced this work during the early twentieth century. His practice often involved painting directly onto black oilcloth, a material that allowed the dark background to remain visible through the paint layers. This specific technique contributes to the stark, atmospheric quality of his compositions.

Family Feast depicts a social gathering set against a dark, nocturnal backdrop. The figures are arranged in a linear, frontal manner, typical of Pirosmani's approach to spatial organisation. The subjects are rendered with simplified forms and bold outlines, focusing on the essential characteristics of the individuals and the objects on the table. The table itself is laden with food and drink, reflecting the cultural importance of the supra, or traditional Georgian feast, in the artist's social environment.

Pirosmani often utilised a limited palette, allowing the contrast between the dark ground and the lighter figures to define the scene.
