Torii Kiyonaga, a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, produced this work during a period when the genre expanded beyond depictions of courtesans and actors to include historical and legendary narratives. The composition presents two figures in a setting that balances human action with natural elements. To the left, an elderly warrior with a long beard sits beneath a pine tree, his posture suggesting contemplation or strategic planning. To the right, a younger warrior stands near the water, equipped with a bow and quiver, looking out toward the sea. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy surrounding the figures provides context for the historical events depicted, typical of the ehon (picture book) format of the Edo period.

Kiyonaga is recognised for his ability to render figures with a sense of physical presence and grace. In this print, the lines are precise, defining the folds of the armour and the texture of the garments with clarity.
