Description
Fan Foel looks across a dark mountain lake towards a flat-topped escarpment, where the still water gives Carmarthenshire's high ground a restrained, memorable drama.
A wide bank of muted green grass slopes down from the right, with exposed grey stones breaking its lower edge. Across the water, a long black cliff runs beneath folded hills, while a squared rock buttress rises sharply at the far end. Soft cream clouds fill the upper sky and leave a pale sheen on the lake beside Fan Foel.
Fan Foel sits among the Brecon Beacons, where paths cross open upland above secluded waters. People who have followed the ridges here may recognise the shift from close turf and stone to the enclosed blue basin, with the rock face holding its line across the shore.
