This etching by the Nuremberg goldsmith and engraver Christoph Jamnitzer belongs to a series of designs exploring the grotesque. Published in his 1610 work, 'Neuw Grottesken Buch', the print displays the imaginative freedom characteristic of late Mannerist decorative arts. Jamnitzer, a member of a prominent family of metalworkers, utilised his expertise in ornamental design to create these hybrid figures, which often served as patterns for goldsmiths, sculptors, and cabinet makers.

The composition features two primary figures rendered with precise, calligraphic line work. On the left, a composite creature incorporates zoomorphic elements, including a snout and wings, integrated into a large, spiralling volute. This creature holds a candle, which is supported by a grotesque mask. To the right, a human figure is depicted with a torso formed entirely from a volute, echoing the scrollwork motifs common in the period. The figure holds a tall, lit taper, while a small, bird-like creature rests at its feet.

The imagery reflects the fascination with the bizarre and the monstrous that permeated European art at the turn of the seventeenth century. By blending human, animal, and architectural forms, Jamnitzer created a visual language that prioritised invention and technical skill. The etching demonstrates the artist's ability to translate the three-dimensional complexity of metalwork into the two-dimensional medium of print. The figures appear to exist in a void, allowing the viewer to focus on the fluid, curving lines and the imaginative anatomy of the subjects.
