This etching by Herman van Swanevelt depicts a rural scene situated outside the Porta del Popolo in Rome. Swanevelt, a Dutch painter and etcher, spent significant time in Italy, where he became associated with the Bamboccianti group. His work often focuses on the Roman countryside, capturing the quietude of rural life through precise line work and atmospheric shading.

The composition features a rustic farmhouse, or 'casa rustico', positioned centrally. The structure displays the weathered textures of stone and masonry, typical of the period's rural architecture. To the left, a figure walks along a path, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the open space. In the foreground, a small flock of sheep grazes on the hillside, their forms rendered with economical, descriptive marks. The surrounding trees, including tall, slender poplars, frame the building and lead the eye toward the horizon.

Swanevelt employs a variety of etching techniques to differentiate textures.
